Greetings fellow DC Canes!

We hope this email finds you enjoying your 4th of July holiday weekend!  Your DC Canes board has been working hard behind the scenes to plan a summer full of exciting events for you.  Please see below for some of the awesome events we have ready for you!


Welcome to DC Potluck and BBQ

Please join the DC Canes for a potluck-style BBQ on Saturday, July 13 from 1-4 p.m. at the Claridge House in Foggy Bottom (Orange/Blue line accessible, limited metered parking available).  Whether you just graduated from The U, relocated from another city or have been part of our group for years, come on out for some good food, drinks and the chance to reconnect with your fellow Canes. And with just 48 days until the Canes kickoff the 2013 football season, now will be the perfect time to discuss the team’s prospects, share travel plans and reminiscence on old OB memories.

Since this is a potluck BBQ, guests are kindly asked to bring an item(s) to share. We have created a Google Doc to help in the planning process. Please write down what you plan on bringing.  Any item is appreciated.

Football Tickets

DC Canes will secure a block of tickets to each road football game this season!  To order tickets, please send money via PayPal to treasurer@dccanes.com with the subject line “DC Canes Football Tickets.”  In the comments section, please indicate clearly which game you are looking to purchase tickets for and how many you are requesting.  Please also include your correct mailing address and email.  Payment tabs will soon go up on our website as well.

Prices per ticket are as follows (includes all fees and shipping):

USF (9/28) – $52

UNC (10/17) – $72

FSU (11/2) – $92

Duke (11/16) – $52

Pitt (11/29) – $37

Winery Event

DC Canes will be hosting a private tasting event at Desert Rose Winery, a winery in Hume, Virginia started by a proud Miami alum.  The event will go from 1:30-4:30pm on Sunday, August 11, 2013.  We are offering a passenger van option for those who wish to catch a ride out to the event.  The van will leave from the Pentagon City metro station outside the mall at 12:00pm.  We will depart the winery at 4:30pm heading back to Pentagon City.  The cost for the van option is $30 per person and includes the tasting fee.  For those who choose to drive themselves, tastings will be $8. We encourage all of you to organize carpools and have a designated driver should you choose to provide your own transportation out to the winery.

At the tasting event, anyone who purchases 3 bottles of wine will receive a 10% discount on the total price.  There will also be cheese and meat platters available for $12.50 each (serves 2).  You may also bring your own food items to have a picnic if you wish after the tastings are done.

We are taking preorders for both the van spots (11) and for individual tastings.  Please send payments via PayPal totreasurer@dccanes.com with the subject heading “Winery Event.”  Please indicate clearly in the comments section how many van spots and/or tasting fees you are requesting.  If we do not receive enough people to fill the van by Saturday, August 3rd, we will cancel the van and issue refunds for the van portion of the fee.  At that time, we will organize carpools for the people who had paid for the van.

DC Canes has plenty of great events coming up, but we need funds to keep the momentum going!  Dues are $25 for individuals or $40 for couples.  We will be unveiling some dues paying benefits in the next couple months that only paid members will be able to take advantage of, so don’t delay!

To pay dues online, please send money via PayPal to treasurer@dccanes.com with the subject heading, “Dues.”  In the comments section, please provide your name (or the name of you and your spouse if paying a couples membership) and your email address.  DC Canes memberships are good for 1 year from the date of payment.  We will also accept checks at any DC Canes event (checks made payable to DC Canes).  Please consult our blog post onpaying dues via check for more information.

Penn Quarter Sports Tavern, The New Permanent Home For Miami Sports!

We are proud to announce that Penn Quarter Sports Tavern will be our watch party bar for both football and basketball games next season! Penn Quarter Sports Tavern (PQST) is continuing to roll out the welcome mat for us and we are working behind the scenes to make PQST the OB (or Sun Life) of DC!

You don’t have to wait until football season to show your support! We encourage you to frequent the bar whenever you are in the area. When you head in, tell them that you’re a Cane and that you appreciate Penn Quarter Sports Tavern being our new home!  We will be at PQST this fall for every single football game that is on television, beginning with the game against FAU on Friday, August 31st.


Marty Pearl Memorial Scholarship Fund Formally Announced

We are pleased to announce that we have officially named our scholarship fund the Marty Pearl Memorial Scholarship Fund.  The fund is named in honor of former longtime DC Canes board member Marty Pearl, who passed away in late 2012 and who was such a huge part of the board and the DC Canes community until his passing.  The Marty Pearl Memorial Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to students who are matriculating to the University of Miami each fall.  We will be issuing our first scholarships under the new name at the Summer Send-Off event that will take place on August 3rd.  More information about that event will be provided when we receive it from Coral Gables.

We encourage you to donate to the scholarship fund.  We will hold raffles at each watch party, with all the proceeds going to benefit the fund.  Additional donations are always accepted and greatly appreciated.   You may pay via check or cash at any of our events or via PayPal to treasurer@dccanes.com (Please note clearly that the money being given is for the Marty Pearl Memorial Scholarship Fund).  We thank you for your support of DC Canes and the outstanding students in this area that will be attending The U!
