December 2013 Newsletter
Greetings DC Canes,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and for those who celebrate, I hope your Chanukkah has been incredible as well! We are entering the holiday season with a football team that’s bowl-bound and a couple other items that will surely keep you warm during these cold months!
Hurricanes Football Bowl Game
The Hurricanes have completed the regular season and for the first time in 3 seasons we will be appearing in a bowl game! We expect to find out which bowl we will be playing in on Sunday, December 8th, after all of the conference championships have been played. Whichever bowl game Miami is selected to appear in, we will have a watch party for it at Penn Quarter Sports Tavern!
Stay tuned to the Hurricanes Football website for more information on the bowl game when it’s announced, including tickets to the game if you plan on attending. We also hope you will continue to show your support for the Marty Pearl Memorial Scholarships in purchasing raffle tickets for your chance to win some awesome Miami gear. See you at PQST!
Wreaths Across America – Saturday, December 14th
DC Canes will again be taking part in Wreaths Across America at Arlington Cemetery where we will be honoring our heroes and laying wreaths on the headstones at the cemetery. This year’s theme is “Come with a Mission – Leave with a Memory.”
We will be meeting at 8:45am on Memorial Drive in front of the Visitor Center (the same place as last year). When you get off the ANC Metro, start walking on Memorial Drive. You will see the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at the end of the road, but before you get there you’ll see the Visitor Center on the left.
At 9:00am we’ll start walking to the McClellan Arch (located on McClellan Drive between Sections 33 and 12) for the Opening Ceremony, which will include some introductory remarks and a short briefing to provide basic information to volunteers. After the ceremony, we will move to our designated area to begin laying wreaths.
At 11:00am there will be a wreath laying at President Kennedy’s grave, then a wreath laying at 11:30am at the USS Maine Mast Memorial, and then a final ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers at noon.
Due to limited parking available near the Cemetery and the high number of volunteers expected, you are highly encouraged to take Metro. ANC is accessible via the Blue Line (Arlington Cemetery stop), and pedestrian-accessible gates are a short walk from Rosslyn (Orange Line) and both Pentagon and Pentagon City (Yellow and Blue Lines).
To sign up for this community service event, please RSVP via our Facebook event page. For any questions, please contact Vivek Patel at email@example.com.
