DC Canes April 2014 Newsletter

DC Canes,

I’m sure a lot of you are glad that it’s finally April!  Finally, there’s some sun and some warmth and a chance to shed those winter clothes!  With the change in season, DC Canes is heating up and April and early May brings a few events for your enjoyment.  See below to find out what’s on tap, including information about how to get involved with next year’s DC Canes board!

 

2014 DC Canes Annual Meeting & Banquet – May 4th, 1:00-3:30pm

The 2014 DC Canes Annual Meeting & Banquet is right around the corner!  It will be on Sunday, May 4th from 1:00pm to 3:30pm atCarmine’s Restaurant, 425 7th Street NW, Washington, DC.  This is a great opportunity to network with fellow alums in the DC area and to further connect with your DC Canes board and learn how to become more involved in DC Canes.  The event begins at 1:00pm with a cocktail/networking portion, with lunch service beginning at 1:30.  The Annual Meeting portion begins at 2:30pm.

The cost to attend this event will be $40 for paid DC Canes members and $50 for nonmembers.  Space is limited, so make sure you get in on the action!  Head to our event page to register.  All proceeds for this event will support the Marty Pearl Memorial Book Scholarship that provides financial assistance to matriculating Miami students from the DC area.

 

Nominations for the 2014-15 DC Canes Board Now Open

Are you interested in becoming more involved in DC Canes?  This is your opportunity!  DC Canes is calling for nominations for members interested in helping to lead the chapter during the 2014-15 year.  We are accepting nominations for all positions except for President.

You can find a description of the various DC Canes positions on our website.  Board member requirements include attending at least 50% of board meetings, planning and executing 2 DC Canes events and being a paid DC Canes member.

If you wish to nominate yourself or someone else for any position(s), please send your nomination to nominations@dccanes.com with the subject heading “DC Canes Nomination”.  Be sure to include a short explanation of why you or the person you are nominating would be a good fit for the board.  Nominations will be accepted until Friday, April 18th at 5:00pm. 

 

Global Networking Day – April 23rd

The U has declared April Professional Development Month, and they culminate this month with the first Global Networking Day on April 23rd.  Come out to our panel event, “Getting to the Top of the Hill”, featuring Xavier Hughes, BBA’03, Vicki Rivas-Vasquez, JD’07, Benedict J. Teagarden, BM’08, and Kasey Cantwell, BSMAS’10, MS’13!  The panel will be in the Cullen Room of Busboys and Poets, 1025 5th Street NW, from 5:30-7:30pm on Wednesday, April 23rd.  There will also be opportunity to network with fellow DC Canes.

No Better Time To Pay Dues!

With springtime finally here, there’s no better time to pay dues than right now!  Dues are $25 for individuals or $40 for couples and gives you benefits for a year from your purchase date.  In addition to our deal with AllCanes that will save you 10% on any online or in-store purchase, there are other member benefits on certain events that will allow you to save money.  To pay your dues or to make a donation to DC Canes, please follow the instructions on our website.

 

Scholarship Donations Accepted

We are always accepting donations for the Marty Pearl Memorial Book Scholarship.  The Scholarship fund provides financial assistance to matriculating Miami students from the DC area.   We are on pace to award the largest amount of scholarship money in our history, but to get to our goal, we need your help!  If you feel inclined to donate to our Scholarship, please follow the link on our website for donations.  Please make a note that the donation is earmarked for the Marty Pearl Memorial Book Scholarship.  We thank you all for your continued support!
